Masking with a Framelit…Really!

It’s a long story. I won’t bore you with the details but I had virtually NO Coastal Cabana Paper after using lots of it for my February card class. I found a scrap to use for a mat but none to cut out the Happy Birthday (the scrap I used for the mat already had something punched out). So, I improvised, masking with the Happy Birthday Framelit!

The reason that Coastal Cabana was so important was that it is one of the colors in this week’s challenge over at Global Design Project. Click here or on the image below and check out all the cards there. By the way, the designer for this week’s project is Cheryll Miller, a lovely Australian demonstrator I met while in Orlando in November. Her card is beautiful!

Design Notes for Happy Birthday Framelit Card:

What I wanted to do was use some Coastal Cabana Card Stock to cut out Happy Birthday with the Happy Birthday Framelit. No luck. However, I found a Happy Birthday I’d already cut out, an extra from some earlier project. I used just a tiny bit of SNAIL Adhesive, adhered it to some Whisper white Card Stock and then sponged around it with Coastal Cabana ink as it if were a mask. Problem solved!

The other fun part of this card was that I got to use my new Rectangle Stitched Framelits for the Whisper White piece. The final touch was to add some Wink of Stella to the flowers from the Tropical Chic stamp set.

Waterfront with Sympathy

I recently needed a special sympathy card. The father of a friend of mine passed away. He had been a science teacher and quite the outdoorsman. I knew the the Waterfront stamp set would be exactly what I would need for this special card.

Design Notes for Waterfront Sympathy Card:

The Waterfront stamp set makes it easy to create a serene, beautiful card. This scene makes me think of a lakeside mountain, probably somewhere that my friend’s father would have loved.

For both the mountains and the water, I simply used the stamp two or three times, re-inking each time. The shading on the trees was created when I stamped them, then stamped again without re-inking. For the sun, I just made a mask of the mountains from a scrap of paper then stamped over it. (Go to my Video Tutorials page to find a link to my video about Masking.)

I began to put the card together and decided I need some texture or interest in the background. The Seaside Textured Embossing Folder, seemed to do the trick. Just enough texture.

Is It Retiring?

The stamp set that I used for today’s card, Waterfront, is not on the retiring list. However, there are lots of great stamp set, Framelits, punches, inks, card stock, …Well, you get the idea, lots of stuff is retiring. So, check the lists and see what you need to order. I’d love to be your demonstrator! If you place an on-line order of $50 or more with me this month, I’ll send you a spool of Gold Ribbon as a thank you.

On the Waterfront – The Card

Well, I specified  “The Card” as not to confuse with the movie. But, I’d guess that might not be a problem. Anyway, I finally had some time to play with the new stamp set Waterfront. I’m in love. So many ways to arrange mountains, lakes, trees, sky. And, great sentiments too. I even got to do a little masking.

This week’s challenge over at Stamp, Ink, Paper was “Card Maker’s Choice”. So, this is my choice.

SIP challenge 138, Diannescards.com

Design Notes for Waterfront Card:

I started with the water but I think you can start where ever you want! The mountains came next and then the trees and sentiment. After I stamped the trees on the right, I thought I wanted some more trees behind the mountains. I created a mask by stamping the mountains on a piece of scrap paper and cutting them out with my Paper Snips. Next I added the tiniest bit of Snail Adhesive on the back of the mask and placed it over the mountains I’d already stamped. Finally, I stamped the trees behind the mountain. I like how I have a little space between the mountains and trees. I think it adds a bit of perspective. I did a video on masking a few weeks ago. Here’s a link to that video.

As you know, I like to add a little hint of things to come on the envelope. Here’s a picture of the inside and a peek at the envelope. I don’t want you to miss anything.

By the way, I did add some Wink of Stella to the water area. It’s hard to see in photographs but really nice when you see the card. Trust me.

There’s more about Amazing You that I’ll be sharing soon. Well, I’ll give you a hint… there is a  coordinating set of Thinlits that you can also get for FREE! Some samples next week. You are going to love it!

Are you wondering about the “masking” part referred to in the blog post title? That’s how I got the great gold accent behind the flower.

I’ve been playing a lot with masking the last week or two and decided to create a video tutorial for you. I show you two types of masking. You will see they are easy and easier!

Design Notes for Amazing You Card:

First, I inked up the flower stamp with Calypso Coral and then I used a Stampin’ Write Marker to ink up the leaves. I created a mask of the flower and leaves then used that to cover the Calypso Coral and Wild Wasabi image. Next, I used VersaMark and Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder with the sunburst stamp. I thought the “celebrate” repeated along side in Calypso Coral ink was a good way to finish it off. Finally, I added some Gold Metallic Thread behind the focal image. You can never go wrong adding some gold.

Message in a Bottle or Genie in a Bottle?

I recently purchased the Message in a Bottle stamp set. I wanted to make a birthday card and thought what I really wanted was a genie to grant wishes! So, I masked off the bottom of the mermaid and made her into a genie!

Design  Notes for Message in a Bottle Card

Well, I stamped the bottle then stamped another bottle to use as a mask. But it didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. It looked like a mermaid behind a bottle. Not what I wanted. Take 2.

Message in a Bottle stamp set, Masking, Stampin' Up!, diannescards.comTurns out, there was an easier way to do it. Since the top of the bottle was flat, all I needed to do was put a scrap of paper across the top and stamp. That way I eliminated the extra stamp image on the sides.
