I recently needed a special sympathy card. The father of a friend of mine passed away. He had been a science teacher and quite the outdoorsman. I knew the the Waterfront stamp set would be exactly what I would need for this special card.
Design Notes for Waterfront Sympathy Card:
The Waterfront stamp set makes it easy to create a serene, beautiful card. This scene makes me think of a lakeside mountain, probably somewhere that my friend’s father would have loved.
For both the mountains and the water, I simply used the stamp two or three times, re-inking each time. The shading on the trees was created when I stamped them, then stamped again without re-inking. For the sun, I just made a mask of the mountains from a scrap of paper then stamped over it. (Go to my Video Tutorials page to find a link to my video about Masking.)
I began to put the card together and decided I need some texture or interest in the background. The Seaside Textured Embossing Folder, seemed to do the trick. Just enough texture.

Is It Retiring?
The stamp set that I used for today’s card, Waterfront, is not on the retiring list. However, there are lots of great stamp set, Framelits, punches, inks, card stock, …Well, you get the idea, lots of stuff is retiring. So, check the lists and see what you need to order. I’d love to be your demonstrator! If you place an on-line order of $50 or more with me this month, I’ll send you a spool of Gold Ribbon as a thank you.

Well, I specified “The Card” as not to confuse with the movie. But, I’d guess that might not be a problem. Anyway, I finally had some time to play with the new stamp set Waterfront. I’m in love. So many ways to arrange mountains, lakes, trees, sky. And, great sentiments too. I even got to do a little masking.
This week’s challenge over at Stamp, Ink, Paper was “Card Maker’s Choice”. So, this is my choice.
Design Notes for Waterfront Card:
I started with the water but I think you can start where ever you want! The mountains came next and then the trees and sentiment. After I stamped the trees on the right, I thought I wanted some more trees behind the mountains. I created a mask by stamping the mountains on a piece of scrap paper and cutting them out with my Paper Snips. Next I added the tiniest bit of Snail Adhesive on the back of the mask and placed it over the mountains I’d already stamped. Finally, I stamped the trees behind the mountain. I like how I have a little space between the mountains and trees. I think it adds a bit of perspective. I did a video on masking a few weeks ago. Here’s a link to that video.
As you know, I like to add a little hint of things to come on the envelope. Here’s a picture of the inside and a peek at the envelope. I don’t want you to miss anything.
By the way, I did add some Wink of Stella to the water area. It’s hard to see in photographs but really nice when you see the card. Trust me.

Are you wondering about the “masking” part referred to in the blog post title? That’s how I got the great gold accent behind the flower.
I’ve been playing a lot with masking the last week or two and decided to create a video tutorial for you. I show you two types of masking. You will see they are easy and easier!
Design Notes for Amazing You Card:
First, I inked up the flower stamp with Calypso Coral and then I used a Stampin’ Write Marker to ink up the leaves. I created a mask of the flower and leaves then used that to cover the Calypso Coral and Wild Wasabi image. Next, I used VersaMark and Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder with the sunburst stamp. I thought the “celebrate” repeated along side in Calypso Coral ink was a good way to finish it off. Finally, I added some Gold Metallic Thread behind the focal image. You can never go wrong adding some gold.

I have a friend who is going through a rough time. My first thought – “I’ll make and send her a card.” That’s what I do. You can probably identify with that. The Lots of Love stamp set seemed perfect for the task of reminding her that I am thinking of her.
Design Notes for Lots of Love Card:
I wanted to have both flowers and leaves on the front of the card. So, first, I stamped a few flowers. On another piece of paper, I stamped and cut our another flower. I used the cut out flower as a mask so I could add leaves that looked like they were behind the flowers. Can you see how the top flower has lots of leaves stamped on it? That’s the mask.
The mask flower had just a tiny bit of SNAIL adhesive on the back so it would not move while I stamped the leaves.
